Fire Places, First Thoughts
Fireplaces, WOW, who ever thought there were so many options. I didn’t until I researched what is available. This site hopes to show you some great looks for your fireplace. I put together pieces that seem to go together naturally, mix and match to create the perfect area to gather with friends and family.
As I read more and more I ran across something called a fireplace insert. My heart sank as I thought this would put an end to this whole concept, but, it didn’t. Turns out inserts are an alternative to a traditional fireplace. The caveat is, to convert a traditional fireplace to an insert there’s lots preparation to be done for this to work. The face of the existing fireplace might need to be flattened either be chiseling or grinding. Drilling for electric and gas feeds must be done and air supply and exhaust tubes must be installed in the flue as well as installing a chimney cap. Further, the damper must be removed to allow for the tubes and this may involve some additional chiseling. All in all, the overall cost of an insert, parts and labor is currently estimated at $3,000.00 to $4,000.00 dollars. In my opinion, and if you are in a fairly well insulated home, I would just keep my traditional fireplace. Happily, all the items herein work for fireplaces and inserts.
This brings me to the next item concerning older homes.Something many home owners don’t usually think about is chimney liners. This is usually a minor issue unless a deteriorated liner radiates heat toward the adjacent wall of the house (fire hazard). Newer homes shouldn’t have this worry but in older homes a simple inspection can reveal whether there is a problem. Deterioration of brick, clay, stone or ceramics is easy to identify. Thankfully, a stainless steel liner from a local supplier/installer will give years of service. So there you have it. What I found was far more detailed than what I just wrote but simply put, your fireplace area can become the focus of your home for family and friends to enjoy.
